Cargo Handler/Crane Operator -Chattanooga, TN
Description:
Parker Towing Company operates Ports and Terminals in Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee; Decatur, Pickensville, Birmingham, and Tuscaloosa Alabama. Qualified applicants must be motivated to work a flexible schedule, eager to work with a multitude of cargos, be prepared to serve our customers in a variety of projects and accept variances in work schedule to include occasional weekends and holidays. Some travel may be required.
*This particular job opening is for our Chattanooga location, though the job may require some work at our other facilities from time to time.
Motivated candidates will have the opportunity to progress within the organization and potentially qualify for differing positions in Operations and Management based upon skill sets and aptitude.
Responsibilities:
• Operate cranes to safely load and unload cargo from barges, trucks, and storage areas.
• Operate forklifts, front-end loaders, skid steers, and other terminal equipment as assigned.
• Handle steel products, bulk materials, project cargo, and other commodities moving through the terminal.
• Inspect cranes, forklifts, rigging, and other equipment before use and document required pre-operational inspections.
• Select and properly use slings, chains, hooks, spreader bars, and other rigging equipment.
• Inspect rigging for damage, wear, and proper identification before each use.
• Follow established lifting plans, hand signals, radio communications, and direction from supervisors or designated signal persons.
• Secure, block, brace, stage, and organize cargo in warehouses and outdoor storage areas.
• Assist with barge positioning, line handling, and other marine terminal activities.
• Load and unload trucks while maintaining safe separation between employees, drivers, and operating equipment.
• Perform general terminal labor, including cleanup, maintenance, sweeping, pressure washing, and material handling.
• Maintain clean and orderly work areas, equipment, warehouses, docks, and access routes.
• Report unsafe conditions, damaged cargo, equipment problems, spills, near misses, and incidents immediately.
• Follow company safety policies, environmental procedures, customer requirements, and terminal operating practices.
• Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, training programs, and incident-prevention activities.
• Assist with basic equipment maintenance, lubrication, fueling, and minor repairs when trained and authorized.
• Work cooperatively with terminal management, coworkers, truck drivers, vessel crews, customers, and contractors.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by terminal management.
Requirements:
• Applicant must live within 50 miles of assigned Port
• Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly
• Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
• Able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and twist frequently
• Able to push and pull carts, pallets, or equipment
• Able to reach above shoulders and below waist level
• Able to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, and arms
• Able to climb ladders or stairs as needed
• Ability to work safely and follow instructions
• Ability to show up to work on time
• Work flexible schedule and possible overtime
• Must have a valid driver's license
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Ability to work in an outdoor environment
• Experience in running equipment a plus (forklift, skid steer, front end loader, crane)
